Surrey Hills Orchestra
The Surrey Hills Orchestra is a community orchestra that rehearses weekly during school terms and holds major concerts in May and December playing mostly Classical and early Romantic music with some Baroque and lighter classical music
It was established in 1980 at the Camberwell String Library for players keen to play in an ensemble. It has grown to more than 40 players, but STRING PLAYERS are always in demand - musicians who play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass. BRASS PLAYERS are needed for some works but not others, for some concerts but not others.
It has grown in size and competence and now has the full complement of strings, woodwinds, French horns and percussion to perform symphonic works. Extra brass and percussion are brought in as required.
Music performed is mostly chosen from classical and early romantic eras, as well as some lighter music chosen from the many Broadway and Gilbert and Sullivan musicals or classical ballets. Recent concerts included works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Weber and Brahms.
We are generously supported by the Rotary Club of Balwyn through the Boroondara Council Arts Grants program.
